I would propose for
people with BIID to get therapy. I think therapy may eventually be defective
after a while. It is strange to me that this condition has a specific
demographic of people. Someone choosing to be disabled is a foreign concept to
me. I am also very shocked because usually people want to be the
opposite. There was a part of the article that mentioned a french man holding a
gun to the doctor and demanding his leg be cut off. It showed me how serious
and desperate these people are about their desire. They are willing to risk
jail time or go to far lengths to amputate themselves. The beginning of the
article when the guy named josh was finding ways to rid himself of his arm. He
even tried to hold his arm out while driving in hopes of getting side- swept. I
do not understand BIID because I do not have BIID. Hopefully one day we can all
learn to accept and accommodate people regardless of the lifestyle they choose
to lead. And also that we may all be consistent and refrain from bias when
discussing different 'mental illness's' or lifestyles. It was an interesting
article. Some other interesting quotes from the article is “Dr. Smith argued that by preventing his
patients from pursuing more life-threatening alternatives, he was following the
Hippocratic oath to do no harm.” It surprised me that a doctor would
defy medical rules and risk his entire career to perform these amputations. It
shows that there are some people out there who are willing to perform these
amputations regardless of the consequences. I think more research has to be
done about it because it really is still a mystery to many of us, and it is
hard to judge when you just don't know.
